Craft Brewery near Rome: Why Podere 676 Is Worth the Trip

Just 30 minutes from Rome's centre, Podere 676 is not your typical taproom. It's a working organic farm with 700+ hop plants, CCPB-certified barley fields, and a brewery built inside the family's 1950s hayloft.

If you type "craft brewery near Rome" into Google, you'll find dozens of results. Taprooms, brewpubs, beer gardens — the scene around Rome has grown fast in the last decade.

But Podere 676 is different. And it's worth explaining exactly why.

A real farm, not a backdrop

We're located in Testa di Lepre, Fiumicino — about 30 minutes from the centre of Rome, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Lake Bracciano. This isn't a rural setting chosen for aesthetics. It's the family farm that our grandfather Pietro received in 1953 as a war veteran from Ente Maremma.

In 2020, four cousins decided to brew beer here. Not in a new industrial unit. In the old hayloft, using ingredients grown on the same land.

That's what "agricultural brewery" means. The hops growing 200 metres from our fermenters are the same hops that end up in your glass.

What makes it worth the trip from Rome

1. The hop fields are real We grow over 700 Cascade hop plants and 4 hectares of CCPB-certified organic barley. When you visit, you walk through them. You touch the cones, smell them in summer. That connection between plant and pint is rare, even in Italy.

2. The numbers tell a story Every beer at Podere 676 has a number: N° 51, N° 3, N° 5, N° 50, N° 14, N° 11. These aren't brand codes — they're the hop row numbers in the field. The Pilsner N° 51 is brewed from the 51st row. Once you know that, the beer tastes different.

3. The tour is led by the founding family The tours are led by one of the four founding cousins — personally, every time. Reviews consistently describe them as passionate, knowledgeable, full of the kind of stories that only come from actually living and working a place. It's not a corporate experience. It's a conversation.

4. The beer is CCPB-certified organic Very few craft breweries in Italy hold CCPB organic certification. We do. That means every ingredient — hops, barley, water — is traceable and meets strict organic standards. It's rare, and we're proud of it.
